If February ended today, this would be the third coldest winter on record in the US, after 1979 and 1899.

Unless you include Alaska. Alaska has had one of the warmest.
In fact the entire polar region has had one of the warmest winters on record.
And this wasn't even an el nino year. In fact, 2013 was the second warmest year on record what was not an el nino year.

it is hard to keep that cold air up north with that nasty polar vortex sucking it all down south.
Cold in North America for sure, but one of the warmest winters ever in Europe. I think I've only scraped frost off my windscreen twice between Oct and now.
